Southwest Invitational / Indian Summer
The New Mexico Corvette Association (NMCA) belongs to and is recognized by the National
Council of Corvette Clubs (NCCC). Annually NMCA presents sanctioned Corvette
competitive events with national points associated and awarded.
This tradition began in 1969 and came to be known as "Indian Summer" due to the fact that the event
was usually held in mid-late September or early October.
Weather conditions are
generally ideal during this season and the name helped identify the event with New
Mexico, its people and its heritage. From time to time, for a variety of reasons, this
annual event would occasionally shift to the late spring period. Weather conditions
were favorable and NMCA became a launch event for the summer rather than a season
wrap up. Since a spring event didn't really match with "Indian Summer", a new name
emerged and the event became known as "Southwest Invitational" (SWI). You may see either or
both of these two names in mentions and materials. The important thing to
remember is that they both identify the premier Corvette competitive event in New Mexico,
and perhaps the southwest.
