C4 Becomes A Ramp

We often refer to the C4 Corvette as "wedge" shaped, an ode to the good old fashioned door stop that we've been using for eons. This makes sense because from the side, that's precisely what the C4 looks like. In its day, the fourth-gen Corvette had a truly revolutionary, radical look, though today, we're pretty used to the idea of wedge-shaped cars. However, as it turns out, there is one big downside to this popular design - it turns the C4 Corvette into a ramp of sorts, just waiting for some high-riding SUV to drive over it.

Unfortunately for the owner of this C4, a distracted Ford Explorer driver recently did just that, and the video evidence was promptly posted over in Reddit's popular Idiots in Cars thread. Thankfully, it all went down in a residential area in Glendale, California at low speeds, so no one was injured. But it's still a bit alarming that the stock-height Explorer was able to roll right over the Corvette like some sort of monster truck.

The Explorer driver approaches an intersection and is clearly on their phone, which is part of the problem. There's also a Mazda crossover parked on the side of the street, obstructing their view. However, once the SUV is past that point, it's pretty clear that there's a car coming directly at it. The Corvette driver keeps going, seemingly thinking that they can fit in between the parked Mazda and the oncoming Explorer, but the latter driver turns in too sharply and instead hits the front driver's side bumper of the sports car.

From there, the SUV rolls right up on top of the fender and proceeds to drive down the side, smashing the driver's side window on the process. Rather than stop, the driver just keeps on going until they've completed the monster truck-like act, as if they simply ran up on a curb. They do stop shortly after that, however, likely in a bit of shock, as is the case with the C4 driver. The resulting damage doesn't look too terrible, but given the low values of C4s these days, it's unclear if it will live to see another day, sadly enough.
