Z06 Cooks Clutch In 10 Seconds

This burnout attempt went very wrong.

Everyone knows how much fun burnouts are to do. It's not an especially difficult technique to master, it just takes some practice. But if the burnout isn't done properly then the least of your problems will be shredded tires. Take this guy as a prime example.

As the owner of a Chevrolet Corvette Z06, he's got some pretty serious power at his disposal, a staggering 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque courtesy of a supercharged 6.2-liter V8. The temptation of driving fast and hitting the track is great, as is performing some seriously smoky burnouts. And this is where everything just went wrong. This recently uploaded video is both funny and somewhat painful to watch.

The Z06 driver must have asked his friend to film performing a burnout but that's not what ultimately happened. Instead of burning some rear tire rubber, he cooked his clutch. Evidence of that happening is the smoke coming out of the car's rear end and through the front engine compartment.

There was another critical sign that things were about to go bad: the rear tires weren't spinning. At all. That track-focused rubber definitely provides a lot of grip, but only if you get them to spin. Otherwise, well, this situation is the embarrassing result.

The good news is that the Z06 isn't totaled, just its clutch. It can be replaced but it probably won't be cheap. Insurance doesn't cover things like this. Perhaps the owner should have checked the box for the optional eight-speed automatic instead of his now-roasted seven-speed manual.

In any case, there's a lesson to be learned here, and it's this: practice doing burnouts on a less expensive car if at all possible. And a note to the guy who filmed the video: the least you could have done was rush over to the driver and inform them about the lack of tire spin. That's what friends are for, right?
